Ceiba is an immersive visual journey that traces the cycle through the three levels of the Mayan cosmos. Across three chapters of continuous motion, the work descends from Xibalba, the underworld beneath the water, through Kab, the living earth, to Ka'an, the sky. Then the fall begins again.
The work draws from Mayan cosmology, where the ceiba tree is the axis of the world: roots in the underworld, trunk in the living earth, canopy in the sky. The sun walks this path every day. It is the oldest cycle.
At its base lies the cenote, where the Maya placed their dead with offerings of jade and gold, sacred cargo for the journey to the underworld. The work begins there, where nature has reclaimed what was buried.
This project begins with a deep investigation cosmology, ecology, art history, spatial theory. We use the latest large language models as research infrastructure: to read further, cross-reference, and uncover references on the project. Every frame of Ceiba is produced using the frontier of generative AI, compositing, and rendering pipelines. At 27K+ resolution, the work contains over 700 animated assets and holds up on any surface, from a single screen to a wall of light.
